STARSPELL · DESIGN REVIEW · 2026-09-09
UNDER ONE SKY
The versus page stops being a poster and becomes the dueling ground itself: the same living
night-sky world the duel already rises through, a heading at last, a new hero — THE
DUELISTS, two mage constellations reaching for one shared star — and the people the systems already know
(standing duels, friends online, recent rivals, the circle) standing on the page instead of hiding behind a sheet.
Tap the four states below — the page carries each of them.
Skylar's ask, verbatim (9/9, voice): "We also want to redesign how the versus page
looks, right now it's kind of empty with a odd sword logo at the top middle of the screen. Give me a redesign that
looks good."
One correction the code insisted on: the sword logo is not the ⚔ emoji — it is drawn art
(vsSwordsTex, built to honor the no-emoji law). What makes it odd is that it floats wordless over a void:
since the 9/2 challenge-first rebuild the page is a 210-unit crest, two buttons, and roughly 45% empty night
— while the ⚔ emoji still survives as text in nine places (the home button is literally "⚔ VERSUS ⚔"). This
page fixes the void, gives the crest words, and retires the emoji debt screen-wide. How to rule: tap a chip
on each numbered question, add notes, then COPY VERDICTS in the bottom bar and paste back to the console.
I · THE PAGE TODAY
← swipe — current left, proposed right →
The current page in numbers (verified against the running game, v0.93.0): a wordless 210-unit
crest at y168 over a breathing glow · ~200 units of bare starfield · two gold doors · another empty foot band —
and every name the game knows (friends, recent rivals, the circle) hidden behind one tap in an overlay sheet.
The menu is the only versus surface still standing on the flat 90-dot starfield: its own lobby and every
duel already run the full parallax sky world. The proposal brings the page home to that sky — and everything on
it fills from data the systems already hold. No new synced data anywhere in the core.
II · THE DUELING GROUND — FOUR STATES, NO EMPTY ONES
The mechanics, once: the flat starfield becomes the shipped
sky-world rig (framed a touch deeper into the night than Home — no moon, colder aurora, fireflies dimmed to
six — so it reads as a different hour of the same world); the wordmark is the swept home-button string in the
gold letterpress bake, so localization is automatic and no sixth string is minted; duel plaques, presence
chips, the identity chip, and the record whisper all render shipped truths (the duel ledger, the
friends/recents maps, the rating tiers, the versus-victories counter). Bands rank once at page open — the
1-second tick may recolor dots and update words, but never reorders the page under a child's finger.
III · THE DUELISTS — THE HERO, AND ITS FALLBACK LADDER
Two faceless mage constellations — yours gold, the rival's moon-blue — reaching for one bright
shared star: the duel's own fiction (both players rise through one seeded sky) drawn in the game's native art
form. Pure chart data through the shipped beast renderer: the stars fly in on the first visit of a session, stand
still after. But two ~10-star figures at this size is an unproven read — so the ladder is pre-declared, judged on
a real phone, and cheap to descend.
← swipe the ladder →
A · THE DUELISTS — TWO MAGES ★
The full tableau: two figures, one
zenith star between their reaching hands. The star flares when a summons arrives — the sky itself
announcing the challenge.
B · ONE TWIN CHART
If two independent figures read as
scribble at phone size: one joined chart — the mages share the star as a single constellation, the way
Gemini's twins share theirs. Half the stars, one silhouette.
C · BLADES BENEATH THE WORDMARK
The floor: keep the shipped crest,
smaller, anchored under the new VERSUS wordmark and over the star-strewn ground. Even this alone cures
"odd floating logo" — the crest was never the problem; the wordless void was.
IV · THE SWEEP — EVERY ⚔ DIES
The crest already obeys the law; the text does not. Nine survivals, each mirrored in all five
languages — swept in one pass, with a grep gate (zero U+2694 in the repo) so none regrow.
| WHERE | TODAY | PROPOSED |
Home button · versus | "⚔ VERSUS ⚔" | "VERSUS" with small drawn-blade glyphs flanking the label — the same treatment the new wordmark wears |
Summons banner · smTitle | "⚔ %1 challenges you" | "%1 challenges you" + a 20u drawn-blades sprite at the pill's left |
Rematch buttons · versus.js | "⚔ REMATCH" / "⚔ ANSWER THE REMATCH" | drawn glyph beside the label (hit-pads re-applied after every setText) |
Rival row button · vsAgain | "⚔ AGAIN" | "AGAIN" with a fitted mini-blades glyph inside the pill |
Status / toasts · vsInDuel · vsAnswered · vsBotAnswered | "⚔ in a duel"… | emoji stripped — the rows and toasts already carry (or gain) the drawn glyph |
Battle note · vsLang | "⚔ this duel is woven in %1" | "this duel is woven in %1" |
Trophy icon · rival-star | icon: '⚔' | fitted drawn mini-blades via the trophy grid's glyph seam — the versus meaning survives, the emoji doesn't |
Regression net: the sweep edits every language block and touches the HOME screen, which no
versus harness covers today — the build card carries a home-button pin, the U+2694 grep gate, and re-runs of the
three social harnesses alongside the page's own rebuilt checks.
V · THE BANDS, CLOSE
STANDING DUELS — FROM QUIET TEXT TO SEAL-PLAQUES
The duel ledger already exists (the home meadow renders the same truth); on the versus page it
is promoted from bare 8.5-unit text to dark nine-slice plaques: drawn-blades glyph, rival's name, the
shipped status fiction ("✦ your move" · "%1 weaves…" · "away from the sky — your summons waits"), share/cancel or
enter/abandon at the right. Your-move plaques wear a breathing gold rim — pre-baked texture, alpha tween
only, never a per-frame redraw, per the iOS renderer's law. The band head carries five cap pips (one
lit per standing duel) so the five-duel limit teaches itself before the cap sheet ever scolds. An incoming
challenge also lands here as a gold-rimmed plaque with a one-tap ACCEPT — young players miss sliding
banners; the plaque waits. A fifth duel folds into the shipped "+%1 more" row rather than silently dropping.
UNDER THIS SKY TONIGHT — THE PRESENCE STRIP
Up to three pill chips: friends online first (green pulse), then recent rivals with the
night-clock ("last night", "4 nights ago"), then circle mages — who glint ready but are never labeled
"online": they keep their quiet-player fiction. Every chip's action is dressed as a button (gold when a live
duel starts now, dark when it lands a waiting summons) and routes through the same cap gate as the doors, echoing
"consulting the stars…" in the note line — no silent scattered summonses. Chips are 44-unit tall (the tap law),
rank once per page open, and a visible › ALL MAGES chip opens the full social sheet — the poetic band head
is a caption, not a secret door. When three plaques already stand, the strip folds to one compressed row instead
of vanishing: the players who duel most keep their one-tap rematch.
THE MEADOW FOOT — GROUND UNDER THE DOORS
The sky world's meadow crests at the foot with six drifting fireflies; over it, once it exists,
the record whisper — "✦ 12 versus victories", the one synced record the game keeps. At zero wins the fireflies own
the band alone (a brand-new player's meadow should be alive, not labeled empty). The identity chip in the top
corner carries your name and rating tier ("✦ Wispfall · 1024") — stakes in the corner, the rating card one
tap away. Both doors keep their words and their order, re-anchored to the true foot so the ground always survives
beneath them — which also fixes the shipped narrow-phone bug where a door's sub-line peeks below the open sheet.
VI · ONE CONTINUOUS PLACE
The strongest reason for the sky swap is what already happens after the tap: the searching theater
and the duel's rise-together both run this exact world. Today the menu is the one flat room in the sequence —
after the swap, menu → search → rise is a single unbroken place.
1 · THE GROUND (the menu)
2 · THE SEARCH (shipped theater)
3 · THE RISE (shipped duel entry)
Phase-2 flourish (separate card, optional):
in the searching theater your gold Duelist stands assembled while the rival figure's stars drift scattered — and on
"OPPONENT FOUND" they fly together with the shipped gold flash. The wait becomes the story of the wait.
VII · WHAT BUILDING IT WOULD MEAN
Core ~4–5 dev-days, six slices, versus.js + strings.js + small seams:
1 · the sky swap (world rig in, deeper-night framing, firefly dimming, iOS-Canvas object-census pass) — ~1 day
2 · The Duelists (pure chart data + assemble-once-per-session + reduced-motion static; the two-tint path verified
on the Canvas renderer) — ~0.5 day + the on-device legibility judgment (ladder pre-declared above)
3 · the relayout (wordmark, identity chip, plaques + cap pips + summons plate, foot anchoring, record whisper) — ~1 day
4 · the presence strip (live maps subscription, chips + dress + cap-gate routing, ALL MAGES door, fold rule) — ~0.5–1 day
5 · the ⚔ sweep (five language blocks + drawn-glyph placements + home-button pin + grep gate) — ~0.5–1 day
6 · harness (the page's check rebuilt for the new layout in the same card: no-overlap at 390-wide across all four
states, object census, doors-hidden-under-sheet, home pin) — ~0.5 day
Named honestly: two new strings ("— STANDING DUELS —", "under this sky tonight") ship ×5 languages with a
human look at de/pt; the moon stays out of the versus frame via the framing (if a real no-moon knob is wanted it
touches shared sky code Home depends on — flagged, not assumed); tall-phone slack opens between strip and doors,
never inside the bands. NEW-DATA flags, all designed OUT of the core: per-rival head-to-head records and
loss counts exist nowhere (a future ledger stays local-only or waits on the fossil verdict); a rival's zodiac sign
is not synced (sign-in-versus would be new synced data — Skylar's stamp gates it); there is no versus leaderboard.
Phase 2, separate cards: the theater assemble-on-found flourish, and one MJ summons-crest card in the frozen
formula (faceless duelist figures beneath one gold star) for the share/summons surface only — the page itself
needs zero new art files.
Nothing here is built. This page is a look, not a queue item — each slice fires only on "done and agreed",
separately.
